KEITH SCHOOL: 1
When senior striker Dominic Meyer knocked in teammate Andy Volk’s pass for the final goal of Rockford Christian’s 7-1 blowout of Keith, he helped his team accomplish something unique for the RC boys’ soccer program. It was their 100th goal scored in the season.
“I didn’t score the 100th goal, my team did,” said Meyer, who finished the night with two goals and an assist. “Every goal we get is not made by one individual, but by the team as a whole. Most of our goals are made with combo plays. There is almost always an assist to credit.”
Volk, who added three goals, one assisted by Meyer, agreed it was a team effort, saying, “We’ve worked really hard this year and to see that work pay off with a big accomplishment like 100 goals is amazing.”
It was the second time this season that Rockford Christian (15-4-1) defeated Keith 7-1, and it is the Royal Lions’ fifth straight victory over their in-town rival. In meeting their scoring milestone, 16 of the 19 rostered varsity players have contributed a goal, including senior co-captain Cole Dunn who added a penalty kick goal against the Cougars.
“That’s what’s most impressive, the fact that its more than just one person scoring the goals,” the center back said.
To Volk, that’s what makes the team so dangerous heading into the Class 1A playoffs.
“We have been able to finish from many different positions this year,” said Volk, the team scoring leader with 27 goals and 26 assists. “We create lots of opportunities and capitalize on them.”
Three non-conference games against NIC-10 opponents Belvidere North, Jefferson and Freeport remain before the start of the playoffs on October 9 for the Royal Lions.
