Fuller Forest Preserve, Winnebago – Rockford Christian (2A #8) competed in the 7 school Roger Fredrickson Invitational on Tuesday, October 2. The Royal Lions won their fourth meet of the season with a program low score record of just 20 points! Riley Wells (Sr.) outpaced the 75-man field for his third individual victory of the season; he completed the muddy 2.05 mile circuit at Fuller in 10:17.
Brent Brunner (Sr.) ran a course best and finished 3rd overall in 10:25. Sophomore sensations Stephen Thomas and D’ Artagnon Beaver went 5th-6th in tight 10:44-10:48 grouping. Both sophomores saw nearly sixty seconds drops from last year's efforts. Nicolas Capriola (Sr.) sealed the school record score in 9th place - equaling his course best from 2016. Carter Fryer (Jr.) also finished in the top 10 overall runners in 11:11. Finally, Cal Granite (Sr.) closed the varsity placers with his own lifetime best of 11:18 in 13th overall.
Two separate squads held the previous low scoring record of 21 points. In 2003 -- at the Independent Conference Championship -- Brandon Mull (2004), Gusser Carter (2004), John Deery (2004), Jordan Groh (2005), and Jared Carlson (2006) went 1-2-5-6-7 for 5 all-conference finishes. And at the Forest City Invitational on September 17, 2017 it was Wells, Josiah Vogel (2018), Brunner, Jack Kurtz (2017), and Noah Wells (2017) who tied the original record with a 1-2-3-4-12 placement. This 2018 Rockford Christian squad placed 1-2-4-5-8 (20 points) in the team standings; they averaged 10:40 for the Fuller 2.05 mile course - also a program record.
The victory is the fifth consecutive Fredrickson team title for the Royal Lions since they started attending the meet in 2014. Conference rival Winnebago (1A #15) was the 2nd place team with 54 points. Other participating schools included Rockford Auburn (70 points), North Boone (98 points), and Pec-Durand (152 points).
Following the example of their varsity squad, the Royal Lion jayvee pack saw many lifetime and course records fall. JT Emenecker (Jr.) ran 11:33 (16th place) a 30 second improvement over last fall’s effort. Josh Honkamp (Sr.) tied his lifetime best at Fuller in 11:37. The freshman duo of Ben Capriola (20th, 11:37) and Ethan Walsh (21st, 11:41) continue to rapidly improve as they learn their paces. Jonathan Kempe (So.) had a big kick to snipe several runners in the final stretch; his mark of 11:59 was good enough for 29th place. Another big kick came from Oliver Buckner (So.) who busted his two-mile personal best by nearly 90 seconds! Ian Kissick (So.), Tony Chen (Fr.), Jon Jon Laskonis (So.) and Golden Ge (So.) all ran personal bests, as well.
