One hat trick wasn’t enough for Andy Volk in Rockford Christian’s regional semi-final match against underdog Lutheran; he went for two. In a 10-0 dismantling of the Crusaders, the senior striker tallied six goals, easily his highest number in a single game all season, and, perhaps any season.
“This was the first time since I was very little that I scored six goals in a game,” said the RC soccer co-captain. In typical fashion for him, Volk added, “But I was only able to accomplish those goals because of my team around me.”
Words that often are little more than a sports cliché, however, could not be truer. Each of Volk’s goals was assisted by a different Royal Lion. His first goal at the three-minute mark was off a pass from sophomore midfielder Ben Wood. Sophomore Gage Wiebe assisted his second goal. One minute after that, Volk’s third was a finish off a combo play between himself and teammates Dominic Meyer and Joe Glass.
The fourth goal was a redirection from senior co-captain Cole Dunn’s free kick. His fifth was from a feed from outside back Isaiah Romero. And his sixth? Well, OK, that one was unassisted with Volk doing the work himself in what manager and score keeper Kaitlyn Monkmeyer called “Andy vs THE WORLD.”
The way the ball was spread among the Royal Lions is a positive change, according to Volk, noting that ten players had either a goal or assist in the regional semi-final.
“In my past high school years there have been only a few kids doing nearly all the work,” he said. “The Lutheran game showed the dynamic our team has this year. We have so many different players capable of making a difference on the game.”
The win gave the Royal Lions a 17-6-1 record and set up a 10am rematch on Saturday at Rockford Christian against Winnebago for the regional title.
