(RC 1, Woodstock Marian 1, RC 5-3 win in PK shootout)
In a tense game full of shouts and yells, cheers and calls, it was the absence of a sound that proved pivotal to the outcome in the IHSA Sectional semi-final match-up between Rockford Christian and Woodstock Marian. Tied 1-1 after two overtime periods, the outcome fell to a nail-biting penalty kick shootout. Following senior Ethan Minnick’s successful penalty shot to open the dual, the Hurricanes’ first shooter, junior Jonathan Deprey, popped a cheeky kick right down the middle behind a diving Jace Joiner.
Just one problem. The referee had not blown his whistle. Goal disallowed.
Deprey was forced to shoot again. This time, the Hurricane shooter went to his right, but Joiner dove to it and pushed the shot into the post and away. It was the only save the Royal Lion keeper would have to make. His teammates took care of the rest seizing on the opportunity he’d provided and going a perfect 5-for-5 in their PKs. With each new RC shooter, a hush would fall over the crowd. With each successful shot, the cheers grew louder and louder. Dominic Meyer planted one to his left. Andy Volk to the bottom left corner. Ben Wood to the lower right corner. Cole Dunn sealed it with a shot to the right sending the crowding into a tension-releasing explosion of cheering.
“To have a game like this turn on something like that is fitting,” RC coach Eron Harvey said about the PK redo. “We told the guys it was going to be a fight tonight. I’m pleased with how they responded.”
In the first half, Deprey gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead with a loose ball finish in front of the Royal Lion net. But Rockford Christian rose to the occasion to tie it after Volk spun away from the Woodstock Marian keeper, took a shot that bounced off a defender and then had the loose ball blown past the Hurricane defenders packing the box by sophomore Gage Wiebe for the equalizer.
RC will next play the winner of the Stillman Valley / St. Edward Sectional Final on Saturday at 3pm on Genoa-Kingston High School field.
