4x100m Hawk Classic Champions: Cunningham, Page, Blanton, and Hood
The Rockford Christian dominated the 43rd Oregon Hawk Classic on Friday, April 26. The team amassed 136 points (an RCSTF program record at the meet) and out scored Forreston-Polo [Coop] by 28 points in the 24 team invitational. Woodstock North was third with 56 points. The Royal Lions won 4 -- and scored points in 23 -- events.
The 4x100m squad of Davis Hood (So.), Kody Page (Sr.), Connor Cunningham (Sr.) and co-captain Skyler Blanton (Sr.) ran a blistering 43.56 in windy conditions. Last weekend at the RCI19 the crew dropped the baton. They bounced back with 3 perfect exchanges and produced the second fastest 4x100 in program history. It is also the fastest time for an RCSTF squad outside of championship competition.
Co-captain Elijah Nitz (Sr.) won the shot put with a heavy of 54' 11" with a taped up ankle. Nitz rolled his foot in the RC parking lot early in the week. He also placed second in the discus with a season best toss of 153' 3" the UFO. Fellow co-captain Riley Wells (Sr.) won the 800m in a conservative race splitting 64-59 in the 800m.
Brent Brunner (Sr.) took charge of the 1600m after the first lap and never looked back. He and training partner Stephen Thomas (So.) finished 1-2 in 4:32.82-4:36.93, respectively.
Other noteable performances came from the 4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m relays each placing second. The same sprint quartet of Hood, Page, Cunningham, and Blanton ran 1:32.80. And the all senior contingent of Jace Joiner, Andy Volk, Nic Capriola, and Wells ran 3:28.88. There mark is currently the 6th fastest in 2A per athletic.net (as of 4/27). And although none of the members of the 4x800m relay (made up of Brunner, Thomas, Capriola, and Wells) ran a personal best they ran the #1 time in 2A of 8:09.14.
The "Captain Chains" when to the following athletes: Blanton, who split 10.4, 22.1 and 52.4 in his relays; Tyler Hermansen (So.), who vaulted a PR of 11' 0" and placed 5th; Capriola for his 2:04.5 split and 53.90 personal best in the 400m; and to Coach McKibben for his athletes Noah Fulcomer (Sr.) and Collin Hook (So.) scoring a combined 22 points in the 110m and 300m hurdle races.
